Rates

Indexing rates are based on the following factors:

  • type of book (trade, textbook, scholarly, children’s)
  • density of the text/index entries per page
  • audience level and knowledge
  • page size and font
  • turnaround time
  • inclusion of graphs, figures, tables, notes, etc.
  • number of indexes (name/author indexes are charged at a higher rate)

The most common billing method is to charge by the page for indexable pages. The number of indexable pages are those that the indexer is expected to index. These pages may or may not entail front matter, appendices, and the glossary. Listed below is a general guideline on prices charged per indexable page. Rates are negotiable.

Textbooks: $3.50-$6.00 per page
Trade books: $3.00-$4.50 per page
Young adult and children’s books: $2.25-$3.50 per page
